You know, that's quite difficult question to answer. Well the first part at least. Thing is, I've yet to truly forge an internal personal identity that is entirely my own. Sometimes I find myself in certain situations and circumstances where I feel like my own person but other times I feel like a patchwork of others' ideas. At times I don't bother to think about things from my own realm of perspective; I just extract a mish-mash of other people's opinions, beliefs and viewpoints and spin them into an interpretation I call my own. Who knows, maybe that is who I'm destined to be, after all, these days who has the time to bother to think of something on their own? Or perhaps it's just a stepping stone and these siphoned beliefs and ideals will be used as a foundational basis for a time when I always form my own opinion instead of some of the time. Time is the answer and it will tell, as always.
As for the second question, that could be taken in any number of different ways from the definitive to the abstract. It could be "Why am I in writer's craft?" to "What is my purpose in the world?". However, the abstract isn't my strong suit; for example a bunch of blotted colours on a canvas doesn't translate into a representation of the human condition, it translates to a bunch of blotted colours on a canvas. What's real is what's in front of me, which is why I'm gonna answer the question with the most literal answer: I'm in writer's craft because I enjoy writing and if friends, family and my teachers are to be believed, I'm pretty good at it, plain and simple. Now I'm not talking about all types of writing. I can enjoy writing a story with a premise I find interesting, but as far as I'm concerned, essays are the bane of my existence and should go die in a hole. They wouldn't be missed.
Awesome work bud. Definite props for using the word mish-mash.
ReplyDeleteDavid!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful piece of writing. I like your idea of the self being a patchwork of other influence. That was very vivid. I understand the difficulty in answering the bigger questions but I wonder if you took the easy way out out of laziness or a real belief in it being the "truer" or "more real" answer????
Either way, excellent work here.
ps--the comedy that surrounds your post may take away from the dry humour and sarcasm of your writing. Do you want to send a mixed message? Just a question.
ReplyDeleteExcellent writing bud! I really like how you painted a very visceral and vivid picture with your words! GO SENS! :)
ReplyDeleteA really good read. To be honest, I was thinking to just post "tl:dr" and leave it like that, but doing so wouldn't do your work justice. Reading this made me think (shocking, I know) about my self. It really made me question who I am as a person and what beliefs and views I may have used to become who I am as well. Because Ms. Cat wanted us to give some constructive criticism in our comments, I've wracked my brain trying to find something to help improve this piece. I'm sorry to tell you that there is nothing that I could provide to improve such a wonderful piece of writing and so, I'll just echo the words of a timeless classic:
ReplyDeleteOhhh, if there's one thing I hang onto,
That gets me through the night.
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to,
I'm gonna live my life.
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice,
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly.
When the world gets in my face,
I say, Have A Nice Day.
Jon, Bon Jovi has much better songs (not many, but there are definitely better ones). If anything, a Boston song, More Than A Feeling, would better describe this piece. The reason why, I leave with you to deliberate.
ReplyDeleteOmg David I didn't know you could write haha, I really enjoy your diction and I like the message you're trying to convey. Your first paragraph made me think of a quote from Chuck Palahniuk an amazing writer which I actually think you might like - "Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I've ever known" but ya good job kiddo !
